Breeze in the Trees 5K Race Report

Margo Chmelik

While running is not quite as fun as bike racing I enjoy doing a 5k from time to time. I was really looking forward to this one as I had been running consistently for a few months without any serious injuries. The morning of the race was a bit crazy as Greg's truck wouldn't start and he needed to get to work. Luckily it was just the battery and we were able to jump start it with my car. Got him to work on time and me to race with just minutes to spare. My plan with this race was to sort of use it as a lactate threshold heart rate test. With all the craziness of the morning I forgot my heart rate monitor. So much for that idea. The race got under way and was similar in feeling to other 5k's I have done. Mile 1 isn't too bad, mile 2 is really hard, mile 3 is hard but the end is in sight. My pacing wasn't too hot as each mile was slower than the previous so I went out a little too hard at the start. There was some mud on the course this year which slowed us all down a bit. Made it a bit rough for those with strollers. I ended up with a time of 24:44 which was an unexpected personal record and placed 2nd in my age group. My favorite part was eating pancakes afterwards with some friends. It was a good race.
